Poem: darcy luetzow staddon

we had to

They called,
asked if we wanted to
receive a baby
boy
We talked at conveyor belt sushi,
the lidded white plates bright on their
track
We chose nearly none & ordered
instead from the menu
We weren’t ok so we had
to say
no

We crawled
up
out of the spider’s
basement
We cooked
a lot in a tiny
kitchen
I burned 2 towels on the stove
top & learned not to
care
They called,
asked if we wanted
to receive a
baby girl
I held her 5 days
later,
she made with light
stitch, she
weighing nearly nothing at
all

about the writer: darcy luetzow staddon

Darcy Luetzow Staddon lives on a farm in Japan with her husband, two
daughters, goat, and dog.  She and her family run a small recovery
farm for Japanese hikikomori (those who have suffered from extreme
social withdrawal).  Darcy has loved writing poetry since age 8; she
has also loved music and singing for just as long.  Guitar and
songwriting came along a bit later.
