Could’ve Is For When You Look at The Past From the Present

You could’ve been somewhere else instead of my room mate’s dorm room when we first met, not sitting in my desk chair with a smirk on your face.

            But you weren’t.

You could’ve just been a stranger to me, someone I would just glance at down the hall, someone who didn’t smile at me, or race to walk beside me so I would have someone to keep me company.

            But you weren’t.

You could’ve been the guy who didn’t laugh at my jokes, who shrugged me off when I tried to make plans, who found the silence awkward when we ran out of things to say.

            But you weren’t.

You could’ve been the one to stay when the fights began and we would want to walk away, tired of trying to figure out how far was too far but determined to make it work.

But you weren’t.

You could’ve been the man who said distance didn’t matter and would stick around when things began to get harder.

            But you weren’t.

You could’ve been the last guy I depended on, the final say in all the matters, the one who treated me like a princess and moved heaven and Earth to be with me.

            But you weren’t.

You could’ve been the one I wrote love stories about, who read my writing and told me how well I was doing, who held my hand and held me when I cried over things I was unable to control, who made me laugh uncontrollably and made every person before pale in comparison.

            But you weren’t.
